چکیده

conclusions regarding clinical and laboratory standards institute (clsi) definition for vancomycin susceptibility (mic < 2 μg/ml), it seems that vancomycin may not be considered as the best antibiotic in order to treat heteroresistant vancomycin intermediate s. aureus (hvisa) and vancomycin sensitive s. aureus (vssa) infections, and a new breakpoint for vancomycin and alternative antibiotics should be considered. background new data indicates that vancomycin may be less effective against methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (mrsa) infections with minimum inhibition concentration (mic) within a sensitive range. objectives the aim of this study was to determine the distribution of the vancomycin mic between mrsa strains and observe the difference in mortality between patients, while the influence of changes in mic on the efficacy of vancomycin was also examined. patients and methods a routine date-based study was conducted on 41 mrsa isolates in a hospital in tehran, iran. the isolates were assessed for mic by using the e-test method, and results were categorized into three groups: a (mic < 1.5 μg/ml), b (1.5 ≤ mic < 2 μg/ml) and c (mic ≥ 2 μg/ml) mrsa. results group a was the most common group, followed by groups c and b. although there was no statistically significant difference between patients’ mortality with the mic group, the mortality rate of group a was higher than c and b.

Vancomycin Minimum Inhibitory Concentration for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Infections; Is There Difference in Mortality Between Patients?

BACKGROUND New data indicates that vancomycin may be less effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections with minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) within a sensitive range. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of the vancomycin MIC between MRSA strains and observe the difference in mortality between patients, while the influence...

Vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration in methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus and mortality: more than handwaving?

TO THE EDITOR—We read with great interest the study by Cervera and colleagues on the effect of vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration (van-MIC) on clinical outcome in 93 patients with leftsided infective endocarditis due to methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) [1]. However, various questions remain unanswered. The 3-fold higher mortality in the group of patients with a van-...

Accessory Gene Regulator Polymorphism and Vancomycin Minimum Inhibitory Concentration in Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

BACKGROUND Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia with a vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 2 µg/mL presents a high rate of therapeutic failure in response to vancomycin. In addition, polymorphism in accessory gene regulator (agr) is associated with vancomycin therapeutic effects. The association between agr polymorphism and vancomycin MICs was investiga...

Influence of vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration on the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia.

BACKGROUND Vancomycin treatment failure in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia is not uncommon, even when MRSA is susceptible to vancomycin. The aim of our study was to evaluate whether vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration has any influence on the mortality associated with MRSA bacteremia. METHODS A total of 414 episodes of MRSA bacteremia were prospectively f...

High vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentration and clinical outcomes in adults with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND Patients with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections caused by isolates with a high but 'susceptible' minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) to vancomycin may suffer poor outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine the association of high compared to low vancomycin MICs and clinical outcomes (treatment failure and mortality) in patients with MRSA infection...

Prevalence of Vancomycin Resistance in Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus

Background & Aims: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common pathogens in nosocomial infections. Vancomycin is the most important therapeutic drug of choice for treatment of infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains. Therefore, vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) or vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) strains are warning...
